During August 06 – 10, 2018, X International Conference “Monitoring of Nuclear Tests and Their Consequences” has been held in Kazakhstan on the basis of Institute of Geophysical Research of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The hosts of the conference were Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan (ME RK), Institute of Geophysical Research ME RK, Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, NORSAR Norwegian Center, French Atomic Energy Commission, Institute of Computational Mathematics and Mathematical Geophysics of the Siberian Branch RAS, Institute for Dynamics of Geospheres RAS, International Scientific and Technical Center.
The peculiarity of the conference lies in the fact that it is held on the threshold of International Day for Actions Against Nuclear Tests, which is celebrated upon the UN resolution and Kazakhstan’s initiative, on the date of closure of Semipalatinsk Test Site, August 29, 1991.
Scientists and specialists from 16 countries (Belarus, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Norway, Russia, USA, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, France), four international organizations – Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), International Seismology Center (ISC), IRIS, ISTC, which represented about 40 organizations, participated in the work of the X International Conference. Among the organizations-participants are: Air Force Technical Applications Center (AFTAC), Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, USA (LDEO), Defense Threat Reduction Agency USA, French Atomic Energy Comission (CEA/DASE), NORSAR Norwegian Center, Center for Geophysical Monitoring of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB), Institute for Dynamics of Geospheres of Russian Academy of Sciences (IDG RAS), Federal Research Center “United Geophysical Survey of Russian Academy of Sciences (FRC GS RAS), Scientific Research Institute of Physics of the Earth RAS (IPE RAS), Institute of Geology and Mineralogy of Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences (IGM SB RAS), Institute of Computational Mathematics and Mathematical Geophysics of Siberian Branch RAS (ICM&MG SB RAS), Voronezh and Novosibirsk State Universities, Novosibirsk State Technical University, North-Ossetian Branch of Geophysical Survey of RAS, Research station RAS in Bishkek, Institute of Geophysical Research of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan (RSE IGR), Institute of Seismology of National Academy of Sciences of Kyrgyz Republic, Institute of Seismology of Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan (IS AS RU) and others. In total, 82 scientists and specialists participated in the conference.
Before the start of the conference 72 presented reports have been issued; Vestnik NNC RK was published, which included the first part – 28 reports.
Four sessions of the conference presented 63 presentations (including the poster ones) by approximately 190 authors:
1. Operational readiness advancement of the CTBT verification system (13 presentations).
2. Improving the efficiency in studying the sources of events (18 presentations).
3. The study of nuclear explosions consequences and on-site inspection (14 presentations).
4. The use of nuclear monitoring systems and data for civil and scientific purposes (18 presentations).
