On July 15, 2019 in Moscow in the Main (New) Building of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Russian Pugwash Committee under the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences met with the director of the Kazakhstan Independent Center for International Security and Politics Alimzhan Tyutebayevich Akhmetov.
The meeting was attended by the scientific secretary of the Russian Pugwash Committee, the head of the Committee’s Secretariat, Mikhail Aleksandrovich Lebedev, and the Chairman of the Youth Branch of the Russian Pugwash Committee, member of the Committee, Natalia Samoylovskaya.
During the meeting, a wide range of issues of international security, disarmament, non-proliferation and arms control were discussed. The participants of the conversation paid special attention to the issues of autonomous lethal weapons systems (ALWS), in particular the technical, legal and ethical problems of the development and use of such type of systems.
As part of the discussion, the participants confirmed the importance of strengthening and developing cooperation and interaction between the academic and expert communities of Russia and Kazakhstan in the framework of the Pugwash movement of scientists, and expressed satisfaction with the joint meeting of the Russian Pugwash Committee held on June 28, 2019 in Moscow at the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Pugwash Committee of Kazakhstan.
