The International Conference "Kazakhstan on the Path to Peaceful Atom: Trends and Prospects"

The Pugwash Committee of Kazakhstan (PCK) Secretariat reports that on October 10, 2024, an international conference titled "Kazakhstan on the Path to Peaceful Atom: Trends and Prospects" was held in Astana at the initiative of the Presidential Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan, with the participation of scientists and experts in Kazakhstan's nuclear industry. The event highlighted the historical significance of Kazakhstan's initiatives in the context of the development of the global anti-nuclear movement and peaceful nuclear energy.

The conference participants discussed the prospects for the peaceful use of nuclear energy as a key factor in the socio-economic growth of nations in the near future. An important aspect of the discussions was the ongoing negotiations with potential vendor countries regarding the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan.

The Chairman of the Pugwash Committee of Kazakhstan, Prof. V.S. Shkolnik, expressed his sincere gratitude for the invitation to the international conference "Kazakhstan on the Path to Peaceful Atom: Trends and Prospects," dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the International Anti-Nuclear Movement "Nevada-Semipalatinsk," the cessation of nuclear testing, and the 30th anniversary of Kazakhstan's accession to the IAEA. In his letter, he extended his best wishes for the successful organization and conduct of the event, highlighting its importance as a platform for productive discussions, experience sharing, and establishing professional connections. The conference was also attended by S.R. Savelyev, Candidate in Chemistry and Senior Expert at the Institute of Foreign Policy Studies under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan.

Gumar Sergazin, Director of the Department of Nuclear Energy and Industry at the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, noted that the discussion of the consortium project would be balanced and based on the priorities of national security and economic feasibility, emphasizing that the owner of the project will be a Kazakh company, and the construction can be carried out by a vendor or consortium.
