The Secretariat of the Pugwash Committee of Kazakhstan informs that on 20.10.2023 on the initiative of Al-Farabi KazNU, Almaty Management University, Almaty branch of MEPhI and others, a scientific-practical conference was held at Almaty Management University on the topic: “Strengthening the NPT regime and global security: challenges and prospects”.
The purpose of this event is to contribute to strengthening the regime of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in order to achieve peace, security, stability and sustainable development in the international arena
The conference was attended by Sergey Savelyev, a member of the Pugwash Committee of Kazakhstan under KazNANS, a chief expert of the Foreign Policy Research Institute under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, who delivered a welcoming speech on behalf of the Chairman of the Pugwash Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan V.S. Shkolnik, in which he emphasized that the theme of today’s conference is a priority in the activities of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, because the NPT is an important element of the multilateral disarmament and non-proliferation regime, and all parties should continue to support it in the search for a world free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. The Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs seeks to support the multilateral efforts undertaken at the UN, in particular within the framework of the NPT review cycle
In addition, Sergey Robertovich was a speaker at the plenary session on the topic “Prospects for the NPT and global world security”.
The following topics were also touched upon at the conference:
- Modern challenges to the NPT regime and ensuring global security;
- Regional aspects of cooperation between countries in the field of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons;
- Role of nuclear energy in ensuring energy security and sustainable development;
- Application of nuclear technologies in industry and medicine;
- Place and role of Kazakhstan in the global campaign for nuclear disarmament.
