Virtual event: Regional Security from the Baltic to the Arctic

Pugwash secretariat:

Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs and the Åland Islands Peace Institute organized a digital international research seminar on 26 January 2023.

The seminar focused on regional security in the north, from the Baltic Sea region to the Arctic, including nuclear risks and possible solutions and brought together experts from various fields and countries. The idea is to make such a seminar into a yearly event.

Discussion on regional security and nuclear risks is timely and needed due to the highly aggravated security situation in the world, with ramifications also in the north. The organizers are gravely concerned regarding the elevated escalation and nuclear risks embedded in the present situation.

Disarmament, non-proliferation and peaceful resolution of conflicts are possible when key stakeholders hold an accurate situational awareness based on solid facts. This can only be achieved by robust arms control, disarmament and confidence-building expertise, which needs to be rebuilt and strengthened in our societies, through seminars, academic publications and education. It also requires frank and respectful contacts and conversations.
