Third Session of the Group of Governmental Experts – counsellors to UN General Secretary to consider the role of verification in advancing nuclear disarmament

On April 8-12, 2019, there was held the third session of a group of government experts - advisers to the Secretary-General on the role of verification in the advancement of nuclear disarmament  at the UN Office in Geneva. In accordance with the PCK's Action Plan for 2019, approved on March 14, 2019 by the Presidium of Kazakhstan's National Academy of Natural Sciences, the representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan was the Vice-Chairman of the Pugwash Committee of Kazakhstan, General Director of RSE NNC RK, E.G. Batyrbekov.

The mandate, determined in the UN General Assembly Resolution, envisages the session as final aimed at summarization of the group discussions under first two sessions as well as during consultations in intervals between the sessions.

Draft report of the group was prepared using previously presented reports, submitted documents and discussion results, and served as the basis during the third session.

Experts’ discussion was focused on formation, consideration and agreement upon provisions and definitions taken in the group final report, containing the sections as consideration of the role of verification in advancing the nuclear disarmament process, verification principles, and recommendations for future efforts in the area.

Finally, experts agreed upon the final report reflecting unique experience of participation of the Republic of Kazakhstan in nuclear disarmament verification process. Report of the Group of Governmental Experts – counsellors to General Secretary to consider the role of verification in nuclear disarmament shall be sent to the UN General Secretary.
