Seminar «On non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and security»

On September 25, 2019, in Ust Kamenogorsk, in the conference hall of the Kazakhstan-American Free University (KAFU), pursuant to the “Action Plan of the Pugwash Committee of Kazakhstan (PCK) for 2019” with the support of the KAFU and the assistance of the Kazakhstan Nuclear Society (KNS) the seminar “On non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and security” was held for students, staff, and faculty of Ust-Kamenogorsk universities. The gathering was held within the framework of the announced “Year of Youth” in Kazakhstan.

Erezhep Mambetkaziev, member of PCK at the General Committee of the Kazakhstan National Academy for Natural Sciences (KNANS), President of KAFU, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, opened the seminar with a keynote speech, in which he gave a brief history of Pugwash Movement of Scientists in 1955 and told about the activities and goals of the PCK, established under the General Committee of KNANS in 2017.

Timur Zhantikin, member of the PCK, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Director General of JSC “Kazakhstan Nuclear Power Plants” made a report on the goals and objectives of Kazakhstan, and most importantly, its role in creating a physical reserve of low-enriched uranium under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which was officially launched in June 2017.

Arman Miniyazov, Chairman of the Council of Young Scientists at the National Nuclear Center of Kazakhstan, member of the PCK, told about the history of the Pugwash Youth Movement of scientists that advocates for peace, disarmament and international security, prevention of world thermonuclear war, and scientific cooperation. He also reported about the plans to create the Youth Department of the Pugwash Committee of Kazakhstan in order to develop and strengthen international scientific relations of students, young scientists and specialists.

On behalf of the Chairman of the Pugwash Committee of Kazakhstan, V.S. Shkolnik, a three-volume joint publication of Kazakhstani scientists “Conducting a set of scientific, technical and engineering works to bring the former Semipalatinsk test site into a safe state”, published in Kazakh, Russian and English, was given to KAFU  library.  

S.A. Aliyev, Director of the Atomic Energy Information Center of the Nuclear Society of Kazakhstan finalized the meeting.
