Round-table discussion on the topic: “Strengthening the biosafety capacity of the Republic of Kazakhstan in order to fulfill obligations under the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety”

November 30, 2022. In pursuance of subparagraph 1.4 of the “Action Plan of the Pugwash Committee of Kazakhstan for 2022” the NCB LLP under the National Holding “QazBioPharm” JSC organized a round-table discussion on the topic: “Strengthening the biosafety capacity of the Republic of Kazakhstan in order to fulfill obligations under the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety”.

The round-table discussion was held in a hybrid format (online/offline) with the participation of representatives of the National Center for Biotechnology LLP under the National Holding “QazBioPharm” JSC: (Ramankulov E.M., Kiyan V.S., Mukanov K.K., Tarlykov P.V., Bekshin Zh.M.) and members of the Pugwash Committee of Kazakhstan under the KazNANS (Akhmetov T.Z., Sarmurzina R.G., Burkitbayev M.M., Savelyev S.R., Masalimov Zh.K.) and the Nuclear Society of Kazakhstan (Aliyev S.A.).

Moderator of the Round-table discussion, PhD Ramankulov E.M. in his opening speech noted that the purpose of the event is to give participants an idea about strengthening the biosafety potential in Kazakhstan, including within the framework of the Cartagena Protocol, to inform about what the Cartagena Protocol is and what the biosafety mediation mechanism is.

The Secretary of the Committee, Professor Akhmetov T.Z. delivered a welcoming speech from the Pugwash Committee of Kazakhstan.

Presentations were made on the following topics:

  • PhD Ramankulov E.M. “The Program “Creation of a biobank of rare and endangered species of flora and fauna of Kazakhstan for biodiversity conservation” 2021-2022 - the contribution of the National Center for Biotechnology to the Biosafety of Kazakhstan;
  • Candidate of Biological Sciences Skiba Yu.A. “The experience of the Almaty branch of the National Center for Biotechnology on preparedness and response to biosafety threats in the Republic of Kazakhstan”;
  • Candidate of Biological Sciences Manabayeva Sh.A. “Genetically modified organisms. Methods of monitoring and assessment of possible risk”;
  • Doctor of Biological Sciences Mukanov K.K. “The Central Portal of the Biosafety Mediation Mechanism: how to use the information available in the BMM”.

 

The Round-table discussion ended with a question-answer session and summing up
