Pugwash meeting on the NPT-TPNW relationship

On 4 August 2022, Pugwash co-organized a roundtable discussion with the Permanent Mission of Brazil to the United Nations. The event was held in the UNHQ on the sidelines of the 10th Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which is taking place in New York City from 1-26 August after postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chaired by Pugwash President Sergio Duarte, the event featured Ambassador Alexander Kmentt (Director for Disarmament, Arms Control and Non-Proliferation at the Austrian Foreign Ministry), Dr Jean Krasno (City University of New York), Dr Togzhan Kassenova (Nuclear Policy Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace) and Mr Cesar Jaramillo (Executive Director of Project Ploughshares) making substantive presentations on the relationship of the NPT with the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Questions and comments from the audience of more than 40 experts and officials addressed several aspects of the subject matter.

On 5 August 2022, Pugwash President Sergio Duarte met Dr. Robert Floyd, Executive Director of CTBTO, in a courtesy call at the UN. They discussed the recent increases in the membership of the CTBT and prospects for its entry into force, assuring him of Pugwash’s full support for the mission of the CTBTO.
