Latin American Regional Pugwash Group has been created

On March 29, 2022, at an online meeting of scientists and former diplomats from seven Latin American countries, it was decided to form a Latin American regional Pugwash Group based on the principles, goals and traditions of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs.

Fabiana Santellan (Uruguay), an information technology specialist, was elected President of the Group, and Odilon Marcuzzo do Canto (Brazil), a nuclear physics specialist, was elected Secretary General.

The Pugwash Group of Latin America will stimulate debates on the role of science and the academia in society, the maintenance of regional and international peace and security, disarmament and arms control, the elimination of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, as well as climate change, human rights, well-being and social development of humanity.

The information is available on the official website of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs.
