The PCK Secretariat informs that the Pugwash Movement of Scientists has published an analytical document entitled “The NPT at a Crossroads”, dedicated to the current challenges facing the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and to the priorities of the international community ahead of the 11th NPT Review Conference in 2026. The material was published on the Pugwash website on 27 April 2026.
According to information posted on the Pugwash website, this document is the first issue of the new “Pugwash-Carnegie Policy Briefs on Science and World Affairs” series. The publication brings together 12 expert analytical papers prepared by members of the Pugwash Council and representatives of International Student/Young Pugwash. It covers a broad range of technical issues, as well as regional approaches to nuclear non-proliferation.
The analytical review addresses key issues facing the NPT regime, including the need to reaffirm states’ commitment to the objectives of the Treaty, prevent a new nuclear era, strengthen the review process, reduce nuclear risks, consider the prospects for nuclear disarmament, respond to regional challenges, and recognize the role of science and expert dialogue in ensuring international security.
The Pugwash Movement emphasizes the importance of an evidence-based and scientifically grounded approach to decision-making in the fields of international security, non-proliferation, and arms control. Particular importance is attached to the development of open expert dialogue aimed at strengthening trust, preventing further erosion of the NPT regime, and identifying practical solutions to reduce global nuclear risks.
The KPC considers it important to disseminate Pugwash materials aimed at strengthening the nuclear non-proliferation regime, developing science diplomacy, and supporting international dialogue on peace, security, and the responsible use of scientific knowledge.
