The Secretariat of the Kazakhstan Pugwash Committee (PCK) at KazNANS reports that on 15 October 2025 a ceremonial gathering was held at JSC “Kazakh-British Technical University” (KBTU) in Almaty to mark the 80th anniversary of the Republic of Kazakhstan’s nuclear industry and the 10th anniversary of the veterans’ organization of atomic science, energy and industry (VANEP). The event, themed “80 Years of the Nuclear Industry in the Service of Peace and Progress,” was organized by the Association “Nuclear Society of Kazakhstan” and “VANEP.”.

Members of the PCK took an active part in preparing and conducting the event: V.S. Shkolnik, M.T. Gabdullin, Ch.T. Laumullin, I.L. Tazhibayeva, B.M. Ibrayev, R.G. Sarmurzina, T.Z. Akhmetov, and V.A. Vityuk (Event Programme — Appendix 1).

Opening the ceremony, President of the Association “NSK,” Chair of the PCK, Professor V. Shkolnik delivered welcoming remarks, emphasizing the importance of nuclear energy for Kazakhstan’s future and the role of veterans and national experts who made a substantial contribution to its development.

Additional welcome remarks were delivered by G. Sergazin, Deputy Chair of the Atomic Energy Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan; KBTU Rector Professor M. Gabdullin; Kh. Aubakirov, discoverer of Kazakhstan’s uranium deposits; L. Yevteeva, Chair of the Union of Veterans of the Nuclear Industry of Kyrgyzstan; Academician U. Mirsaidov (Tajikistan) via video message; E. Sidorov on behalf of the Russian Nuclear Society via video message; B. Ibrayev, Chair of “VANEP”; K. Madiev, Chair of “industry trade union of nuclear industry workers”; and others.
Speakers noted that Kazakhstan’s energy sector is going through a challenging period. The industry has seen both highs and lows, and the country now faces a serious energy crisis that may affect economic resilience. The anniversary of the nuclear industry is not only a reason for pride in the path travelled, but also an important point of reference for moving forward. Kazakhstan intends to remain a reliable partner in the international nuclear community and a leader in the safe and peaceful use of nuclear energy.
During the gathering, veterans and employees of industry enterprises were presented with awards. Words of gratitude and appreciation were extended to all who have dedicated themselves to this demanding and responsible field.
The event concluded with a concert programme featuring creative ensembles from Kazakhstan, as well as performers from Russia within the delegation of the Interregional Public Movement of Veterans of the Nuclear Energy and Industry, performing under the Russian nuclear industry’s cultural and educational programme “Ecology of the Soul”.
