Prospects for the development of hydrogen energy in Kazakhstan discussed in Astana

The PCK secretariat informs that on June 23, 2025 the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan hosted a round table on the topic: «Prospects for the development of hydrogen energy in the Republic of Kazakhstan». The event was organized by the Committee on Ecology and Nature Resources of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The work was attended by members of the PCK: Vityuk V.A. – Deputy General Director for Science of the RSE NNC RK and Miniyazov A.Zh. – Director of the CTC HE of the IAE branch of the RSE NNC RK, Chairman of the Youth branch of the PCK.

During the round table, the Vice Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan stressed that hydrogen energy is one of the most promising areas in the context of the global energy transition. Special attention is paid to green hydrogen produced on the basis of renewable energy sources.

According to estimates by international organizations, by 2050 hydrogen can occupy up to 20% of the global energy mix. Kazakhstan has all the necessary resources to actively participate in the emerging hydrogen architecture: renewable energy potential, strategic location between Europe and Asia, as well as access to infrastructure and logistics routes.

Joint projects are being implemented with Germany with the support of the Office of Hydrogen Diplomacy in Astana. Initiatives to localize production and create hydrogen clusters are being discussed with China. A memorandum was signed between the National Nuclear Center, China Energy and Shanghai Jiaotong University. National companies are also involved in the work. KazMunayGas launches a hydrogen technology laboratory in Atyrau, implements projects on blue hydrogen and low-carbon ammonia.

Among the key challenges are high capital intensity, the need for regulatory support and the rational use of water resources. The Industry Development Concept provides for water conservation measures, especially for arid regions.
