The Pugwash Committee of Kazakhstan (PCK) Secretariat reports that on 16-20 May, 2025 a Pugwash delegation travelled to Tehran for meetings about the Iran nuclear file and regional security. Led by Secretary General Prof. Karen Hallberg and President Dr. Hussain Al-Shahristani, the delegation held several side meetings with officials and also participated in the Tehran Dialogue forum organized by the Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS).
A one-day workshop was held on 17 May, kindly hosted by the IPIS, with Pugwash participants interacting with members of the Tehran strategic community. The key theme of discussion was the ongoing negotiations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America to resolve the standoff over Iran’s nuclear program that had existed since the JCPOA was abandoned in 2018. Pugwash members underlined that pursuing a respectful and mutually agreeable nuclear deal is in the interests of the international community—and especially important to regional security and development—to preserve the centrality of the NPT in governing nuclear energy. Any deal should lead to deeper diplomatic engagement with an expectation of reducing tensions in the Middle East region.
Members of the Pugwash delegation meet with IPIS director Dr. Saeed Khatibzadeh (centre); (from L-R) Eldar Mamedov, Paolo Cotta-Ramusino, Hussain Al-Shahristani, Karen Hallberg, Cesar Jaramillo, Robin Raphel.
